1st Maritime Security Conference
“The dimensions of maritime security and their role in freedom of navigation”
On April 17, 2024, the Institute of Foreign Affairs, The Council for International Relations – Greece, and the Department of Maritime Studies at the University of Piraeus co-organized the 1st Maritime Security Conference entitled “The Dimensions of Maritime Security and Their Role in Freedom of Navigation”.
The conference was held in the Eugenides Foundation Amphitheater, with a greeting by Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, Goodwill Maritime Ambassador of the IMO in Greece.
Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, after welcoming the participants, stated that although 90% of world trade is transported by sea, geopolitical risks in maritime trade, wars and, sanctions worldwide are affecting the shipping industry.
In an environment like this, in a world that is becoming increasingly unsafe at an exponential rate, the role of the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador, whose goal is to attract young people to maritime and shipping professions, is becoming more difficult.
“By building relationships of trust with proper representation, proper attraction, and proper working conditions, we will gain the seafarers that global shipping needs,” he emphasized.
