2nd Union for the Mediterranean Stakeholder Conference on Sustainable Blue Economy
19 & 20/2/2024
Eugenides Foundation Conference Hall
The Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy, the intergovernmental organization “Union for the Mediterranean” and the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Union co-organized a two-day conference on February 19 and 20, 2024 at the Eugenides Foundation.
This Conference is an institutional organization of the Union for the Mediterranean as 43 member states participate as well as several stakeholders in the field of Blue Economy. The purpose of the Conference is to strengthen regional cooperation and dialogue through specific projects and initiatives for sustainable development, stability, and integration in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis Evgenidis, Goodwill Maritime Ambassador of the IMO in Greece, participated in the conference and stressed that facing the challenges of climate change, resource depletion, economic inequality, and the imperative to cultivate a sustainable blue economy has never been more urgent.
The Maritime Ambassador said that embracing sustainable practices, such as the adoption of low-emission fuels and the implementation of environmentally friendly infrastructure, can significantly reduce the environmental footprint. This transition not only ensures the protection of our marine ecosystems but also enhances the economic viability and competitiveness of the shipping sector.
But the crucial point he made in his speech is that aspirations for a sustainable blue economy face a notable challenge: the skills gap. Despite significant progress, there is still a significant gap between the capabilities of the current workforce and evolving market demands. This gap is particularly acute in emerging sectors such as offshore renewable energy, sustainable aquaculture, and blue biotechnology. Bridging this gap requires innovative training and education programs that not only equip individuals with the necessary hard and soft skills but also inspire a new generation to pursue careers in these vital fields.
Approximately, 80 speakers and 350 delegates participated in the conference.
