The IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador in Greece and President of the Eugenides Foundation Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis addressed welcome remarks at the anniversary event entitled “Coming towards the sea” on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the magazine “Naftica Chronika”.

Mr. Dimitriadis-Evgenidis stressed the long-standing excellent cooperation of the Foundation with the Nautical Chronicles and the contribution of the Eugenides Foundation in the digitization of the issues of the years 1931-1983.

When asked about the relationship of today’s students with the maritime tradition, he stated that “from an early age children should be learning about the sea and our maritime tradition, through activities and initiatives to attract young people to the maritime professions. “This is also my goal as IMO Maritime Goodwill Ambassador in Greece”, and that “special attention is required for young men and women who study at Vocational Schools and have chosen maritime professions, aiming to provide more efficient education. After all, the motivation for a career at sea is based on the cooperation between Shipping Industry – State, as well as on modern maritime education, adapted to new technologies and environmental requirements.”

Referring to the interest in the maritime and marine professions of today’s generation, he stressed that the level of on-shore jobs is quite high, while the increase of women officers at sea is very obvious.

The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, MPs, and representatives of the shipping industry addressed welcome remarks to the 200 guests who attended the event.
