ΙΜΟ Αmbassador in Greece, Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, under his capacity of IMO Ambassador in Greece and as President of Eugenides Foundation, participated in the panel “New Environmental regulation and impact on Shipping” of the 7th Global Shipbrokers Forum, at the Yacht Club of Greece, in Piraeus, on Thursday 20th June 2019.

The moderator of the panel was Mr. Panos Zachariadis and the panelists included distinguished speakers representing Shipowners, Classification Societies and Academies.

More than 250 delegates attended the event, amongst them, media, Shipowners, Classification Societies, Greek Authorities, Shipbrokers and a lot of young students and graduates entering the marine and maritime professions.

The session focused on the impact of the environment in Shipping and vice versa. The IMO’s contribution is confronting future challenges, proactive practices and impact were the key topics. The necessity of young professionals entering the technical field in Naval Architect, Engineering and Ocean Marine Fields in order to confront future challenges, under the auspices of IMO, and the need for impact assessment practices in the future.

Furthermore, the need for more Greek youth to enter the marine profession has been acknowledged, equipped with knowledge, passion skills, and a lifetime learning mindset.

It has also been recognized that image of shipping in the Greek society has been upgraded during the recent years, whereas more effort has to be made in order to attract more young Greek students into the Marine and Maritime Professions, and encourage soft skills and mobility, particularly on the shore side.

Finally, it has been confirmed by stakeholders and particularly from the Shipowners side that Greece must lead the way into new technologies and innovation, mobilizing the promising new generation.
