“Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”
The webinar “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet” took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, on the occasion of World Maritime Day. The IMO Goodwill Ambassador in Greece Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis – Evgenidis, and representatives of the Ministry of Shipping and the shipping industry participated in the webinar, organized by Isalos.net.
In his speech, Mr. Evgenides indicated the great contribution of IMO, the organization founded by the United Nations, to create international regulations for maritime safety, and the international training framework for seafarers worldwide. In his speech, Mr. Evgenides stressed the important contribution of the IMO to the sustainability of shipping and its contribution to the 17 goals of UN sustainable development.
Mr. Evgenides highlighted the need to raise the awareness of the new generation, as they have a leading role in the Blue Economy and the sustainability of shipping is now based on new technologies and innovation, the importance of lifelong learning education, and the new skills that the seafarers of today and tomorrow need to have. These factors will be crucial for addressing the shortage of capable and trained officers, not only in Greece but globally, both in terms of coastal shipping and seafaring.
Finally, he referred to the contribution of the Eugenides Foundation to Maritime Education, both through its proposals for the reform of maritime education in Greece and through its participation in the European program SkillSea to study the future skills of human resources in maritime transport.
