The new generation embraces the sea

The Patras Port Organization events hall was crowded with students

On Thursday, February 9, 2023, a one-day event was held in Patras, as part of the events of the 5th Regional Administration of Hellenic Coast Guard in cooperation with, on the topic of “Information Activities for the Maritime Profession and the Coast Guard”.

The IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador in Greece, Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, participated in the event which was attended by a total of 210 students from the High Schools of Patras and Rio. Mr. Evgenidis presented the challenges of life at sea and informed the students about the important role of the IMO and the importance of compliance with international regulations in global shipping, to avoid accidents at sea. At the same time, he pointed out the perspectives of the maritime profession, emphasizing the necessary assets of an officer such as the importance of the hierarchy on board and the necessity of acquiring skills.

Ten officers of the Merchant Navy presented to the attending students the various types of ships, the structure, and the way a ship operates, the duties and responsibilities of a Merchant Navy officer, and the ways to get involved in the maritime profession, while they answered the students’ questions who demonstrated special passion and interest in shipping.
