“Choosing a career in Shipping”

On Saturday, January 25, 2020, the conference entitled “Choosing a career in Shipping” was held at the Eugenides Foundation and organized by Isalos.net. The event attracted the interest and active participation of more than 600 students from the Merchant Maritime Academies of Aspropyrgos, Epirus, Ionian Islands, Kalymnos, Kymi, Oinousses, Syros, Hydra, Chios, Warsash Maritime Academy and students of vocational marine high school TEENS.
The IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador in Greece and President of the Eugenides Foundation Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenides and the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr. Ioannis Plakiotakis addressed opening remarks.
Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Eugenides welcomed the students and emphasized that the years of their studies is an important opportunity for acquiring knowledge and skills. He also referred to the significance of lifelong learning, especially in the maritime profession. As he mentioned, the maritime profession is a passport for their careers at sea, with great responsibilities and challenges, requiring them to be constantly up to date with information on new technologies as well as leadership skills.
The IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador also referred to the presence of a large number of students at the event and expressed the hope that in the future more women officers will be present and the role of women in shipping would become more intense and significant.
Merchant Marine Officers and Engineers, shipping company and P&I Clubs executives participated in the two panels that followed. Merchant Marine Academy students, directors and professors, as well as representatives of other educational institutions, attended the Conference.
