“I Choose Shipping”
January 20th, 2023
“Practical knowledge, love, madness, and passion for the maritime profession are needed more than anything else.”

More than 840 students of the Merchant Marine Academy in Nea Michaniona, Macedonia, and students of the 15th Vocational School of Thessaloniki encountered, discussed, and gained valuable insights from representatives of 95 shipping companies at the “I Choose Shipping” event organized by Isalos.net.

Twelve experts discussed the new industry developments, the first training trip, the differences between the types of ships, life onboard as well as useful information on health and safety issues at sea. The event aims to raise awareness of the maritime profession among young people.

Addressing the first-year students of the Merchant Marine Academy in Macedonia, Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, President of the Eugenides Foundation and IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador in Greece, referred in detail to the new environmental challenges global shipping is facing, highlighting the importance of the IMO in the coordinated effort for the de-carbonization of shipping.

Then, encouraging the students for the choice they made, he stressed:
“You are a generation who we expect to build a better Greece. Your generation, I am sure, will have much more to offer. We stand by Naftika Chronika and the Isalos team as we have been connected for decades for our love for the sea, our country, and the new generation. From the bottom of my heart, I wish that since you have chosen the maritime profession, you will do everything with love. Note that you have chosen a passport for the whole world, both land and sea. I advise you to raise the bar in your life a little higher. Skills alone are not enough. Practical knowledge, love, madness, and passion for the maritime profession are needed perhaps more than anything else. Throughout your career, you always have to bear in mind hierarchy, not in the formalistic sense, but as a sense of respect and meritocracy”.
