The Passenger Shipping Companies Association (SEEN) under the auspices of the Ministry of Shipping Affairs & Insular Policy, the Ministry of National Economy & Finance and the Ministry of Environment & Energy, organized a conference entitled “Modern Coastal Shipping – Sustainable Development of the Islands” on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at the Eugenides Foundation Amphitheater.

The main topics of the conference were the need to modernize port infrastructure, improve the connectivity of the islands and promote the green transition.

The conference was attended by top political figures and representatives of the shipping industry, such as the Minister of Shipping Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr. Christos Stylianides, the Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms. Marina Hatzimanoli, and the President of SEEN Mr. Dionysios Theodoratos.

The IMO Maritime Goodwill Ambassador in Greece Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, participating in the 1st panel entitled “The Competitiveness & the Green Transition of Coastal Shipping”, stressed the importance of compliance with the IMO guidelines and regulations for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of sustainable shipping, and then pointed out the need for investments in new technologies and infrastructure that will reduce the environmental footprint of coastal shipping and strengthen the competitiveness of the sector.
