To mark the 25th anniversary of the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Maritime Studies at the University of Piraeus, a commemorative event titled “Shaping Tomorrow: Greek Shipping” was held on May 26, 2025, at the Eugenides Foundation Auditorium.
The event was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Waterborne Technology Platform, focusing on the prospects and challenges of Greek shipping. Special emphasis was placed on innovation, technological progress, environmental sustainability, education, and international cooperation.
The event was opened with a greeting by Mr. Leonidas Dimitriades-Eugenides, IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador in Greece.
In his speech, Mr. Dimitriades-Eugenides highlighted the pivotal role of the International Maritime Organization in global shipping and its ambitious goals for the full decarbonization of the sector by 2050. He also stressed the importance of strengthening academic research and education, as well as the need to renew the human capital of shipping – a sector that stands not only as a pillar of the Greek economy but also as a globally influential force.
The event was attended by representatives of the Greek maritime industry, academics and researchers, delegates from international organizations and companies, as well as students from the University of Piraeus, giving the day both symbolic depth and substantive content.
